Sojourn Montrose is a one-of-a-kind project — and a reminder that the principles behind a well-built home translate to any building worth caring about.

This 4,000 square foot historic church in Houston's Montrose neighborhood was transformed through a full interior renovation that required as much creative problem-solving as it did construction expertise. Samuel DeBartolo Studio made a series of bold decisions that define the finished space: reversing the entire internal floor plan to orient the building toward the greenspace behind it, creating a new front entry that completely reframes how visitors experience the building from the moment they arrive.

The sanctuary's original wooden trusses — exposed by design from the beginning — now define the character of the space, bringing warmth and history into a building that is otherwise entirely new inside. New MEP systems, ADA-compliant restrooms, custom millwork, and custom metal-framed windows and entry system bring the building fully into the present without losing what made it worth saving.
